Kauai by Lynn Collins
The twins flew on a plane that left from San Jose
To a small and beautiful island that was very far
away
They flew over the ocean looking
out a small window
At the clouds that
were below them casting shadows down below
They
landed first on Maui then shuttled to Kauai
Two
of the smaller islands that are part of all Hawaii
Roosters
on the left and roosters on the right
Crowing
in the morning and the middle of the night
Flowers
here and there and orchids oh so rare
Hibiscus
and plumeria were blooming everywhere
They
saw rare cardinals and a talking myna bird
They
asked it several questions but it never said a word
The twins went to a beach in the town of Hanalai
And surfed with
Puff the dragon as he wrapped around the bay
They
hiked a muddy trail to a 300' waterfall
And
swam in the pool below it made them feel so small
They looked up at the sky and saw egrets flying high
Soaring in the misty spray of the waterfall nearby
They snorkled at Tunnel Beach where they swam out to the ledge
To swim with
the fish and turtles that were living near the edge
Needlefish up above and pufferfish down below
Unicornfish and
triggerfish were going with the flow
Butterfly fish swam by and schools of snapper too
Trumpetfish and wrasse went past disappearing in the
blue
The next day was so fine the twins
zipped on a line
They soared above the
jungle just like Tarzan on a vine
Coastal
banyan figs and African tulip trees
And monkeypods and other plants were swaying in the breeze
They bought some pooka beads from a nice Hawaiian man
Who had baby goats and kitty cats and a peacock in full fan
Pineapple plants on the left and papaya trees on the
right
Guava and banana trees were everywhere
in sight
They kayaked down a river then
hiked to Fern Grotto
Where the water
flows through sword ferns to the flowers down below
They jumped back in the kayaks and rowed the other way
To where the sand dunes meet the ocean at the closing of the day
They
visited a lighthouse where many birds abound
Albatross
and moaning birds that burrow underground
They saw red footed boobies that were nesting on the ground
While frigate birds and tropic birds were flying all around
A nene waddled by
and looked them in the eye
While red tailed tropic birds performed a courtship in the sky
The adventure it did end the twins they had to go
But they will travel back again to the
land of the bright rainbow
